Field Trip to Jonas Gerard's Performance

Posted by InspiredArtMinistry on August 11, 2012 at 2:00 PM

Some of the Inspired Art Ministry, Inc. (Iam) students made another field trip on Saturday to visit the Gallery and performance studio of Jonas Gerard in the River Arts District of Asheville, NC.  This is the third taken by Iam:  First to Bob Jones Museum and Galleries in Greenville, SC, to see the $50 million collection which includes originals by Boticelli and Tintoretto; second to the Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, SC, to see the Hudson River School Painters Exhibit.  This was the first stop in the South on the first tour of this exhibition which is housed in the New York Historical Society in NY.  We love to travel for art.

This trip included a take-out lunch from the Clingman Cafe, next door to the Gallery at 240 Clingman Ave. Ext.  We ate on the outdoor tables in the spacious front of the extensive Gallery and Studio space until the live performance at 2:00.  Jonas gave a warm welcome to the audience in the filled studio space and then began his paintng to the sounds of encompassing instrumentals.  He painted three triptichs; one on small canvases, one on large vertical canvases and one on small vertical canvases covered with black that he turned sideways while painting..

All seemed to be caught up in the "free space" aura that Jonas created while lost in his creations.  His effortless strokes, wipes and flowing gestures gave life to his words, "let the paint lead you."  At one point, between the segments of painting, Jonas looked at instructor, Char Avrunin, and said, "Open your heart."  She turned to the students and said, "Did you hear that?"  He said directly to her, "I'm talking to you!"  That directive was taken to that semi-closed heart.

Although neither instructor nor the students present work in abstract, all felt full after the performance and said the experience was well worth the trip.

Go to "Photo Gallery" to see pictures of the experience.
